The United States’ Marine Turtle Conservation Act of 2004 was signed into law on 2 July 2004. The act effectively established a funding mechanism to assist in the conservation of marine turtles and their nesting habitats in foreign countries. In addition to funds appropriated by the United States’ Government, the Marine Turtle Conservation Fund – which is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service – has successfully leveraged additional resources for turtle conservation from an array of domestic and international partners.
From 2005-2009, the MTCF has provided grants to support projects in the Indian Ocean – South-East Asia region totalling some USD 1.2 million. This represents approximately 32% of the total funding made available for international marine turtle conservation work in all regions. Projects in about a dozen countries (almost all of them IOSEA Signatory States) have benefited from the programme. IOSEA itself has been awarded three grants to support the participation of delegates at meetings of the IOSEA Signatory States; as well as a grant to support the IOSEA Capacity Building and Technical Support Programme. Overall, 113 grant proposals have been received worldwide, of which 35 were selected for funding in 2009 alone.
The following table, consisting of content found on the MTCF website, summarises all of the projects that have been funded in the IOSEA region since 2005. Hopefully, it will encourage more applications to be submitted from countries that have yet to benefit from the programme.
For more information on the Multinational Species Conservation Funds, including details of application procedures, please visit the US Fish and Wildlife Service website, at:

The twice-yearly deadline for receipt of applications is: 1 April and 1 October.
